HiLASE
The futuristic HiLASE Centre in the Czech village of Dolní Brežany, to the west of Prague, has been built to house the DiPOLE, a diode-pumped solid state laser (DPSSL) developed to help scientists expand the use of laser technology, and which its Anglo-Czech owners hope will justify a €33m (£24m) investment from the European Commission.

Drinking water reservoir
It’s a challenge to make a functional building look sleek or modern, but the designers of this vast drinking water reservoir in Germany, have managed to do both with great panache, thanks to the use of KS600 Optimo insulated panels from Kingspan, made using hot-dip zinc-coated steel from Metal Trade Comax.

Quai 9
From a distance, the outer shell of Quai 9 resembles an alien spaceship which has landed in the town of Lanester in north-western France. But on closer inspection, the facade is clearly composed of a series of triangular shapes which evoke the white sails of the boats that have been the lifeblood of this area for centuries. The name Quai 9 reflects both the maritime heritage of the region, and the fact that Lanester was established as an independent town in 1909.
